Metal or Traditional, Braces
This is the most common type of braces. Today’s metal braces are smaller, more comfortable and more attractive than they were only a few years ago. The reason most patients choose metal braces is because they’re most efficient and effective at moving teeth. You can customize your braces with colored bands and change the look of your braces with each visit.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces are made of translucent material and are designed to be less noticeable. This option is most popular with adult patients, due to the cosmetic appeal. They have some small disadvantages, however. Ceramic brackets are a little more fragile than metal brackets, and the elastic ties can become discolored between visits, especially if you drink a lot of coffee, tea or red wine, or if you smoke.
With either of these options, your appointments can be monthly or every other month with excellent brushing and dental care.
The Invisalign System
Invisalign is a series of clear overlay templates, called aligners, which have been generated by computer simulation to gradually move teeth. This system is usually available only to more mature patients who are willing to comply with the necessary 23-hour-a-day wear time. Invisalign aligner trays are made of smooth, comfortable and virtually invisible plastic that is worn over your teeth. Wearing the aligners will gradually and gently shift your teeth into place, based on the exact movements Dr. Connell plans for you.
There are no metal brackets to attach and no wires to tighten—just a new set of aligners to put in approximately every two weeks, until your treatment is complete. You’ll achieve a great smile with little interference in your daily life. Plus, most people won’t even know you’re straightening your teeth.
Retainers
Retainers are the most important phase of your treatment because without it, your newly straightened teeth will shift! A retainer is a custom appliance made of plastic that “retains” your beautiful new smile. As you’ll find out in your consultation, no two retainers are alike, even though many look similar.
